Well...I'm tired. Haha.
Year in review (sort of)
First HM (1:59:31), first HIM (5:58:06), first Marathon (4:25:36)...lots of firsts..Med school...stuff..I was happy with my season and am excited that my IMLP training plan has officially started and is going well so far. 7 more months!
Finished off the year with a 16.3km run, 3000m swim and a 1 hr 25km easy recovery ride. On my run I was coming back along the boardwalk in Kaanapali and I saw JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT! Haha. I actually just saw her in Runner's World this month about her 3:09 marathon finish! So cool!
Need to head to bed early today to wake up tomorrow morning at 3AM!! AH!! BIKING DOWN HALEAKALA VOLCANO!! WOOP WOOP! :)

December...Updates
Well December is almost over...
I guess I should start about 3 weeks ago. The swim meet went okay. Well better than okay in reference to the previous year but not okay compared to 5 years ago? Haha. No finals, man the meet was fast. I guess it is to be expected that I wouldn't be as fast as I was back in the day.
This is what I wrote for the last day of the meet on my training blog:
"Well 3 days of JP Fiset done. Not used to 3 day meets anymore. I'm pretty beat--not really sure how that is possible, but I guess my body is just not used to high energy/max effort system use anymore. Swam 7 events...I'm kind of midway between A and B level standards now...I'd say on par with how I was swimming in 2002-2003 ish. Back in the day it would have been classified as a "really bad day in the office"...
You know what else you forget: how much it hurts. Tri is a bit different...there is never really a point, in the swim/bike anyways, where you are going balls out (for lack of a better term) and everything just kind of gets culminated in the run hurting at the end but you are so glad that you are done that you don't seem to notice and the resistance of the water just breaks you...Epitomy of pain for the weekend--200back...just wow...I realise my lactic tolerance is not what it used to be for swimming...but the last 75m of that race just burned to a point where it didn't really feel like I was moving my limbs properly anymore. It was a tad difficult to lift myself out of the water after. It hurt back in the day and it still hurts now. Haha.
Short course meters.
200fr--2:26.39
50bk--36.34--had an oopsie start...didn't slip, but didn't really push off? Ended up negative splitting a 50...ya...
200bk--2:44.67
200IM--2:44:05
100bk--1:16.54
50fr--30.76
50fly--34.10
At least I have real times now? Woohoo! I should probably break out the 400/800/1500fr next year..."
So that is that. After the meet I started running a bit more...then the snow came...and I was alone and I spent a lot of time shovelling snow and took a week off from regimented training to get a rest before IMLP training started on Dec 20.
Dec 20--IN MAUI!!! YAY!! Started IMLP training. I have rented a bike...so far everything is going smoothly...except for the fact that I am a bit sick with sore throat and headache.
Few more days till the New Year!!!

November closes
Well all done! Now I have to get back into training...
Ended up swimming 43.3km this month, but bike/run were scarce. Time to pick it up.
Swim meet starts on Fri, once that is over I need to focus on running to prep for the HM in Jan.
Just under 3 weeks till MAUI!!!

Getting back on the running bandwagon...
I was sitting around this morning debating if I wanted to go run or not...then decided that it was probably a good decision to get my legs back in business given the fact that I have a HM in like 7 weeks...maybe? You know, just putting it out there.
Ran 8.5km or so...didn't feel half bad and it wasn't freezing outside!! Yay! Swim meet this upcoming weekend so I won't be really starting back up until that is done...Got to get that mileage up! Haha.
3 weeks till I leave for Maui!
Picture I took while running...Ya...I'm pretty much the world's greatest photographer...

A winter run
Well I got all dressed up for the first time...double socks, double pants, double jacket..gloves, ninjaclava...the whole shebang.
I'm glad I bought trail runners in October in San Fran. Even the military trails wern't really plowed..so there were some areas of about 10cm of snow.
It was -19C. Brrr...This is my awkward post run picture! Haha

Inner Ear Infection: GONE!!! Woo!
Well I was back in the water today! Felt a bit off not being in the water for over a week, but what are you going to do.
Did a police ride along on Sat night-It was AWESOME! But I was pretty beat all yesterday and didn't end up getting a good sleep at the end of it all because my Dad decided to move furnature and vaccuum at 9am after I didn't get home until 4am due to the ride along...thanks Dad. Last night I just couldn't fall asleep and then stressed myself out about not sleeping...so ya...
Selected meet events for JP Fiset in a few weeks here in Edmonton. 50fr, 50bk, 50fly, 100bk, 200IM, 200fr, 200back...yaaa...we will see how this goes...haha
I cleaned up my room in my attempt to become super duper time management prostar...started the bike room, but that was a bit to much to do in one day...so that got bumped to next weekend. Bike room/office organisation...
Got most of my IM planning done...still a bit to go and then a final read over...it's a bit scary to think about 5hr rides and crazy runs...and just the whole IM thing in general...haha.
Well that is my random update.

First run since the marathon...and other select adventures of Nov 2010.
So I went for a run yesterday...looks like I only actually gave it 3 weeks...vs. the original 6 weeks I was planning...*sigh...why am I such a tri-hard? I actually couldn't take it anymore and not be running...ok...well that's not completely true...Story time:
So last Sunday...I was studying (replace studying with...IM planning) and I started to feel funny...kind of spaced out. Well...by suppertime I was nauseated and the world was spinning. Yay inner ear infection...so for the past week I haven't been able to walk and turn my head side to side without getting dizzy...so I decided to scratch myself from the swim meet this weekend because I haven't swam all week and probably shouldn't race given that circumstance. So yesterday I was feeling like a SUPER LAZY BLOB and decided to try a short run. It was 7C out and I couldn't pass that up...right?
Ran just over 5km with a pretty decent pace. No bum hurting...no real pain. So I'm going to take it "easy" over the next 2 weeks and build up slowly into HM restart training plan for Jan 23. So I have to integrate that into my IM planning...it will eventually get done...
What else am I up to...I'm making a dress for Fall Ball. Well I am altering a dress for Fall Ball and make a belt...because I am talented...
So far I don't think any other adventures have occurred this month...I'm sure some will though.

October: Complete
Well the month of the marathon is just about completed. Took about a week off after the marathon (I swam once...) and then this week jumped back on the swimming and started some "injury prevention" strength training. I was pretty sore after Monday, but my body has adapted somewhat quickly to squats and stuff.
November will be filled up with swim, bike and strength. I might slowly start to inch my way into some running after Remembrance Day to get ready for the HM in Carlsbad.

Nike Women's Marathon: Race Report
I FINISHED THE MARATHON!! 42.2KM! AHHHHH!!!!
Took me 4:25:16. I am not particularly impressed with the time, but hey...its a marathon...definately one of those situations where all you can do is all you can do. I remember being in pain...I remember talking to myself in my head to just keep going...haha.
Woke up at about 4:50 to down a bagel that I brought with me and some GU Brew. Sat in bed awhile and then proceeded to get dressed in my gear and do a final checklist to make sure I had everything. Went downstairs to meet the other girls and we took some pictures before heading down to the race start...All I can say about this is wow...get a bunch of med girls together and it is apparently guarenteed that we will be talking about how awesome or unawesome our gastrocolic reflex was...mine awesome...some other girls...not so awesome. Haha. Yay for gastrocolic reflex non-fail!!! Haha.
Once we had checked our bags we headed to our selected race pace spots. I decided on 9-9:59min/mile. I was with one of the other girls and we did the group stretch and chilled out together until the race start went. It was CRAZY! 25000 runners! They started both the full and half marathons at the same time! AHH!! Haha. The first few km's were as they normally are with the walkers seeding themselves at the front and then having everyone behind them trying to deek them out to get into a solid position on the road. I was feeling pretty good. Ran down by Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiredelli Square then towards Golden Gate Bridge. It was definately an awesome way to see some of the main touristy spots in San Fran. Then the hills started...sure enough like the race elevation map said...hello 6miles...hello hills...I didn't find them too bad and was still moving along at a decent pace...about 9:30/mile. There was this one hill that was never ending...up-plateau-up-plateau-up-plateau-up...on and on. Haha. We hit a long downhill at around 15km and I tweaked my glut injury and proceeded to run a little bit run-hop style for the remaining 27km of the race...ya...haha.
It was also around that point that I really started to become a tad unaware of my surroundings..apparently we ran through Golden Gate Park? Haha. The full and half separated from one another in the park and we did a loop of the park and then came back together just before the finish line when the full turned off and went down and back the New Highway for 10miles. It was so desolate almost when the full and half separated from one another. It was really weird. It went from a huge packed group of people to almost being staggered. Lots of room to run I guess, but it kind of felt lonely. I was starting to feel it a bit by 17miles...then I heard EYE OF THE TIGER!! They had these Nike Powersongs along the route. I was so psyched...I almost started crying..just ridiculous. So that got me through a good .5mile before a new song distracted me from my Eye of the Tiger awesomeness. 18miles...19miles...20miles...Wow it got quiet...people were sort of having side conversations up until that point and then just nothing...no more talking...silence. It was a bit erie to tell you the truth. It was raining by that point and the wind was up a bit. Cold and silence...and the pain. Every step was murder to my feet, knees, hips, glut and low back. I walked 3 aide stations to take in enough water because I was feeling a bit woozy and decided I needed to stop doing that because it hurt far too much to stop and start. I couldn't even focus long enough to calculate what pace I was on per/km from miles anymore....I somehow totally missed the chocolate mile because I was concentrating so hard on moving forward. 22miles...4miles to go...seriously doubting myself at this point but I just forced myself to not think about it...to move one foot after the other in some semblance of a hop-run because my glut was done and my left hamstring was cramping. 23miles--OMG that means there is only 5km left...move it...max a half hr left. 24miles...40km...25miles...1 more mile to go...I just put my angry, pain face on and tried to pick it up to get to the finish line faster. Saw the finish line and guess what? Started crying...the medic came over and told me to sit down in the wheelchair he had and I sat there until I could cohesively put a sentence together to say I was fine and could get up and move. Made it through the assembly line of hawt firemen to get my necklace (which is awesome), finish t-shirt (also awesome), food (gone now...but at the time was awesome)...etc. (I must say it was extemely well organised) Then I heard some of the girls who stayed behind in the rain to meet everyone who finished. And started crying again...I need to get a handle on this. haha.
Race Number and Thermal Plastic wrap thing:
Tiffany Blue Box and Finisher's "medal":
I'm really happy I finished and at least I have a marathon under my belt in prep for IMLP next summer! Need some more miles on the legs, but first I am taking a solid 6 weeks off running to heal and strengthen my glut.
Woke up this morning fairly sore but able to move at least. Wore the compression pants all night and day. Got some new tri gear (why don't we have stores like Sports Basement in Canada?? Honestly...). So all in all a good day! Last night in San Fran! Going to see Alcatraz tomorrow and then hopping on the plane back to Edmonton!
Thanks to everyone who helps and supports me on the marathon/IMLP crazy train! :) You guys are all awesome!

1 WEEK TILL NWM: Getting pumped!
So I have been immersing myself in inspirational propagnda for a past 2 days...well yesterday was pretty much soley Kona...today I was youtubing select inspirational commercials...like my fav Versus commercial from the summer...
"It's you vs them"--haha. Yes...this is the one from July...Bad ass coach dude..."It's you vs can't...it's you vs NO...excuses..." etc etc etc. Haha.
I thrive on this...I have also been listening to some saweet "Eye of the Tiger"...Maybe I should just watch Rocky IV and get that out of the way? Hmmm?
Anyways. Went for a 6km run today...felt pretty decent. Didn't do the 20km as was originally set out in my training plan due to the twinging pain during a 15km hill run on Thursday. Took a few days to make sure I hadn't completely re-injured myself and to stretch out my glutes. My ass isn't bothering me too much right now. My knees were feeling a little bit grindy. I'm so glad there is only really one week left in this season. Hahaha. I want to do some Zumba and strength and decompress before starting the IM build (and rest my legs, of course).
My current NWM race plan: conservative conservative conservative. Since I have never done one before, the first half is going to be pretty chill, focusing on getting into a good rhythm and easy stride. I'm going to really try to focus on having a solid 10km from 25-35km and then bringing the last 7km home with whatever I have left. Smart fueling (I bought all my Carb-boom gus and my GU Brew the other day).
NWM week plan: I'm going to get an easy 10km in tomorrow, a 5km of strides in on Wed, an easy 5km on Fri. Sat is my travel day with my MAGIC PANTS...and then Sunday is the big day! Sleep, sleep, sleep...carbo load on Thurs/Fri night. Hydrate...all that good stuff! :)
Just have to trust that I have done all I can do in prep for this marathon, given the ass injury and long season. Get in there and giv'er!
It's ON!

It's ON!

KONA! and the beginning of future plans!
Macca was something else today!! Kudos to him for pulling that last 3km out! My favourite part was him saying "I'm just glad I finished without the sponges!" Hahaha. Awesome. Just awesome.
I've been sitting here pondering my own IM year. Starting to plan out my training plan for the next 9 months. I have the weekend free because I finished my GI exam yesterday, so I figure I'll get it started? Haha.
NEXT WEEKEND: NIKE WOMEN'S MARATHON--I am so excited to go down with my fellow Bonesaw ladies to San Fran!! Woop woop! 7 more days!!! :)
Post next weekend: Just swimming, strength and some Zumba until Dec 19. Why Dec 19 you ask? Well its the day I head out to Hawaii for my Christmas vacation...and I figure...why not start the IM journey out there? (trying to keep all my intentions about the Big K on the DL for the moment being...but it feels slightly fitting to start where I would ideally, in a perfect world of my mind will end?) So Dec 19 it is.
I'm working on my strength plan for Oct 20-Jan 31ish. I'll prob try to lift 3-4x weekly, plus swimming 4x week, plus Zumba for kicks 1-2x week. Start bike/run on Dec 19. Stop swimming club at the end of Feb. Full onset of IM training: March 1. I realise this might be a bit confusing...but I've got it covered...for the moment. I'll get opinions on my plan when I have figured it all out and inputed, etc. So yaaa.
Well. I'm calling it a night! Awesome race this year at Kona with Macca and Carfrae! I guess it is fitting to start off my IM planning at the cumulative end of one IM season? :)

Study break...NWM=9 days
GI final tomorrow. I'm currently taking a break from my Disney movie marathon study adventure of today.
Currently watching Hercules and I think Beauty and the Beast is next on the list. Then I have to get a 15km hill run in. ONLY 9 MORE DAYS TILL THE NIKE WOMEN'S MARATHON!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Scary.
Right now I'm a bit freaked out with my preparation and taper...but I guess that is normal. I'm forcing myself to try and stick to my original taper plan.
Today-15km hills
Sat-20km flat
Sun--5km flat
Mon--10km rolling
Wed--5km strides
Fri--5km
SUN--RACE DAY!!!
Need to go shopping to gather up some more lytes and gels for the race. The course won't have any gels and I'm debating wearing my H20 belt or not...I'll take it with me for sure and decide when I get to San Fran.
Ok...back to studying time..

Race Results and a Gluten Free Diet Experiment
Well its October...I guess I should update the two races I did at the end of September.
Trail Half Marathon: 2:40:51 5/8 AG, 39/65 OA
Heartbeat Run 10km: 52:16 12/30 AG, 68/144 OA
So pretty dec.
I'm also conducting a gluten free diet experiment to see if I will feel better GI wise and fatigue wise. We will see if it is effective. I'm heading into day 3 tomorrow. I'm sure I will be super craving bread and pasta in about 3-4 more days..haha.

One weekend, Two Race Reports: 5 Peaks Trail Half Marathon and Heartbeat Run
Well...my weekend is over...(well not really over but I'm done)...I have just finished a numbing ice bath and am now watching a movie in front of the TV with my legs elevated while my compression (aka. magic) pants are being washed. Can't wait to put on the magic pants...Anyways, race reports:
5 Peaks Trail Half Marathon: 21.something km
Well...what can I say about a trail half marathon other than it is difficult, grueling, hard, painful, (every other word that describes hard). Three laps of a up, up, up, up, down, down, up, up...you get the picture. There were probably some ridiculous 25%+ grades in there...well it seemed like they were that steep. The first lap of the course set the stage for pain--there were these 2 bridges that were bouncy and would start to double bounce you by the end. When I was passing for the second loop I heard the announcer guy talking over the intercom thingy about how this was the hardest marathon most people would have ever done. Great...I only have 2 laps left...finished the second lap...its starting to hurt now...my legs are kind of wanting to give out on some of the climbs and some of the double bounce bridges...but I finished...gave it for the last 2km and was pretty done at the end. I finished in 2:40ish (results not available yet) and went immediately to my car to lie down. Then had some awesome BBQ food and called it a day.
Edmonton Heartbeat Run: 10km
Well I woke up this morning and was in pain...just pain...quads, hamstrings, ITB, gluts, calves, ankles, etc. Thank you trail half marathon. Walking was tolerable after walking for awhile but stairs...nu uh...Had some cereal for bfast and drove to the race start and hung out with my Bonesaw friends Justin and Anna! I was debating what was going to happen during the run/if I was going to be able to run...but the race started and after 500m of pain the adrenaline kicked in and the pain was minimal. The race started off slow and eventually I got into a rhythm. It was fairly flat with a few rolling sections and short, steep hills...but after yesterday's hills they wern't really all that impressive...haha. Finished strong somewhere between 50-54 min...which I am super happy with given my impaired mobility and tired legs! Woohoo! :) Went for post race bfast and now I am chilling out!
3 more weeks until the Nike Women's Marathon!

Pain is transient...Lesson learned from a 34km run...
So I completed a 34km run today...I decided on this run...at about 29-30km (when I almost phoned home and got someone to come and pick me up) that pain is transient...It has only been about 1.5hrs since I finished and I can honestly say I don't really remember the pain/discomfort...well I remember the discomfort but not the actual level of it...I guess this is a good thing? I must just have a really short memory which makes it possible for me to repeatedly inflict pain on myself?
Anyways...I FINISHED 34KM TODAY...OF RUNNING!!! No big deal...haha.
This is how my day more or less went:
Wake up..."Damn it, its shitty outside...oh well...I'll go eat bfast and see how it goes"...Eat bfast (mmmmm cream of wheat....)...slowly get ready for 34km run...."delay of the inevitable"...go out and place waterbottles in strategic positions at about 20km and 29km...make amazing 4hr running music playlist..."ok,its time to get out there"...
3.5km--"man, maybe the long shirt was a bad idea...its kind of getting hot"...
7km--"this is one long friggin hill"...
11km--"almost at Bon Accord...woooooo...I feel no pain"...
20km--"time to refill waterbottle...ok...this is sorta painful now...oh look? ITS STARTING TO RAIN TOO...man...the long shirt was a good plan"...
25km--"I hate this gravel road...stupid gravel road...ow...knees starting to get angry...when do I hit the paved part...frick...It's up by those trees...all the way up there...ughhhhh"...
26km--"ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"....
27km--"ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...okay I need to walk down this sucker...."....
28km--"I'm really glad I have some awesome music right now...its getting cold...HTFU HTFU HTFU....what was that? HTFU?..."...
29km--"ok...almost there...ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh its raining HARDER and the WIND HAS PICKED UP MORE....BRRRRRRR"....
30km--"should I phone for someone to pick me up...this hurts..."....
31km--"HTFU HTFU HTFU HTFU HTFU HTFU"...
32km--"ya...need to walk down this sucker...those people that just drove by must be wondering what the hell I am doing..."...
33km--"ow ow ow ow ow...HTFU HTFU...ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...just make it up the hill...house on other side of hill...I just want to lie down"...
5pm--1.5hrs post run--"hahaha...I did a 34km run...I don't even hurt sitting here anymore...I can totally do 36km in 2 more weeks...and the marathon? Gonna be wicked awesome...no pain, no pain...lalaldidada..."
Yaaaa...So...I MIGHT be deluded...Its possible.
Now I just really want to eat more food....

Cheers to HEALTH!
So obviously as a medical student I am slightly inclined towards living a healthy lifestyle, etc, etc.
Well what many of you do not know is after I stopped swimming in 2006...I definately went on a 2.5 yr binge of unhealthiness. Gained quite a significant amount of weight (which I was in denial about for about 75% of the duration of that period) and was just not mentally, emotionally or physically healthy. It was a bit of a circular mix where I wouldn't feel well enough physically to go and work out (due to fatigue or whatever)...so I wouldn't and I would be sedentary and eat...which would make me feel guilty...which would make me not impressed with myself...circle back to not feeling well...and so on.
Well in Jan 2008, I had had enough. I decided to start triathlon. It was always a bit of an interest and I decided since I had experience in one of the disciplines that it would be easy...WRONG. Nothing is ever easy is my new motto. I wish...(well maybe I don't wish because how worth it would it be then?) So here I am now...almost 3 years later...I've returned to swimming because tri season for me is over...I'm happier...healthier...lighter...etc...etc...Sure this was a choice I made for myself...but I cannot say how happy I am to be healthy. Today in lecture we were informed that we will be living a week as a "diabetic"--full out glucose monitoring, "insulin" injection and diet modification. I was kind of whiny about it at the beginning of being told this...but I was reading up on diabetic management in athletes and I am so grateful that I do not have diabetes (or other chronic disease with difficult management). I just had a Clif bar...and have been sitting here trying to figure out how much insulin I would need and how much compensation I would have to make due to the fact that I am about to go for a 90min swim practice right away...wow.
I realise this is a bit of a random ramble...but what else is blogging for than to have random rambles...I imagine you all can get the gist. Diabetic week-->starts next Thursday!
So...anyways: Cheers to Health!!

Subaru Banff Olympic
So I have neglected my blog for the past few weeks. In general: went to Vegas for a few days and started school again=crazy, crazy times and trying to get everything organized has been relatively difficult. I have been getting my long distance runs though and am now only 5 weeks out of the Nike Women's Marathon. Have a 28km and a 30km in the books. Need to get a 32-33km in this upcoming week. Have a half marathon trail run and then my final long run before taper time for the marathon.
Anyways: Tri season is over :'( Competed in the final race of the Subaru West Coast tri series yesterday in Banff. Olympic distance tri but the conditions were absolutely BRUTAL!! The water temp was about 10C, so they had to shorten the swim to 750m. SO it was a 750m swim, 38-39km bike and a 10km run. Once we started the bike it started to rain and the wind picked up. So cold. My T1 time was ridiculous. 6min or something! hAHA. Trying to put on pants in T1 when wet is sort of difficult. Yaaa...anyways finished and was 3rd in my age group!!! Woohoo! I got a medal! First non-finisher's medal I have received since starting tri! Time wasn't particularly impressive...but no one's time was particular impressive given the elements. Haha.

Well...Its ZUMBA time!
So I wasn't feeling too bad last week and got quite a bit of tri sport training in as mentioned below...but this week..not so much. Had bad aches and headache for Wed-Thurs...yesterday was alright, but I still wasn't feeling too into training. I'm going to call it post HIM blahs and just not being 100% in the game.
I am supposed to do a 25km run today...but I'm definately not feeling very motivated to do that...so instead...I'm going to go to ZUMBA!! :)
I've wanted to check it out for a few months since I heard about it before school ended on a recreation committee I am a part of...Just looks hilarious and like a wicked good time. Kind of sucky I have to go to it alone...because it would be so funny to go wiht a friend...but I'm sure I will manage on my own. I hope I can remain non-bent over laughing for the hour. Haha.

What do I want to do right now?? Sleep, sleep, sleep, eat and more sleep
Well...1 week ago today I finished my first HIM. I've just been ridiculously tired all week. Going to bed at 645pm on Saturday night...naps...etc. You get the picture.
I still managed to get in about 7hrs of tri sports (well...most of the biking was on a mountain bike) this week though. Did my first real run today:
12x2 min hills
1) 5.5 @ 6.5%
2) 5.5 @ 7%
3) 5.5 @ 7.5%
4) 5.5 @ 8%
5) 6.0 @ 5%
6) 6.5 @ 5%
7) 7.0 @ 5%
8) 7.0 @ 5%
9) 5.5-7.0 @ 3%
10) 5.5-7.0 @ 4%
11) 5.5 @ 6-7.5%
12) 5.5 @ 7-10%
Making sure my ass/hip didn't bother me. Probably could have pushed it a bit more, but I'm happy with the effort I got in today. Did a 1500m swim after and felt sufficiently dead...so ya. I'll take it as long as I am able to run tomorrow after today. Need to bring up the running mileage! 10 WEEKS TILL NWM!!!

Ironman Calgary 70.3
Well I have finished my first half ironman--1.9km swim--94km bike--21.1km run
5:58:06
Swim 30:32
Bike 3:13:23
Run 2:06:52
5/19 18-24F
My finisher's shirt and medal!
Pre-race routine:
Got up at 315 and ate a bagel and half of a banana. Took GU brew on the shuttle with me to drink.
Event warmup:
Some stretching and about 5min swim warmup
Swim
Swim went better than I thought it did. I made sure I was at the front of the pack of women...I have learned my lesson from the past few OWS tris this season and no longer am going to feel cocky for placing myself at the front of the pack at the start. :) My right shoulder was a bit crampy for the first part of the swim and I had some minor spotting problems nearing the end of the swim.
The pro men were coming in at the same time as the female age group wave started and we were told to stay left to avoid any collisions with the men. One women joked how bad would it be if someone ran into a male pro...so we had a good laugh about a minute before the race started. Hahahahaha...yes, it was really funny while sitting in 17.5C water (which isn't actually that cold).
T1
Wet suit strippers were awesome. First race having them--they are the best! Was quite a long transition zone though--meaning we picked up our T1 bags and got dressed and put our shoes on (age groupers were not allowed to leave shoes on bike--wouldn't have wanted to anyways because the transition was set up on gravel). Then we had to run a good ways to pick up our bike and run more to get to the mount line. I was a bit slow getting shoes and my long sleeve on. It was chilly and I made the executive decision to wear my long sleeve (more about this on the bike section). Problem with my long sleeve was when I put it in my T1 bag I had left the sleeves inside out...so I had to get them right side out...a process which probably took 45s to do while wet.
Bike
A few friends were on the course and I saw them and waved at them as I past going up the big hill exiting Cochrane. Haha. One sent me a message saying that by the time they figured out it was me I had already powered away---TURBO POWER!! My climbing was really solid today. Looks like 3 months of training on Vancouver Island and all the hills has proven effective.
Overall, the first 20km were a bit rough for me. It was really cold and my thighs were numb and I couldn't get into a rhythm. It started to rain at one point and there was some wind--YAY for long cycling shirt decision! The road was a bit rough for this first part as well. The road smoothed out after about 30km and I warmed up a bit and aside from the few false flats I think my ride went really well from there.
T2
Had some trouble getting socks on for the run. My feet were pretty numb from the bike because of the rain and cold. Otherwise, I think it was a good transition.
Lots of volunteers to direct people to the spot to rack their bike. Our T2 bags were already placed at our bike rack spot as well which was awesome.
Run
I think the run was pretty solid. My glut injury wasn't really bothering me at all, which was good. I've rested it since my last long training run and that seems to have done the trick. Ran the entire thing except for about 3 steps where I decided that if I stopped running that I wasn't going to finish.
Nutrition on the run was NOT stellar. Those last 2-3km were brutal and I'm sure they would have been better had I taken 1-2 more gels (I counted after and only had 3 in 18km...ya...probably not the best decision. I downed one at about 18km...but I was already in a bit of trouble at that point so it was a bit too late. Legs extemely heavy and cramping. Obviously not enough fluids/glucose/electrolytes on the run. I am happy with the run though--my stand alone best half marathon is 1:59:31 from the Vancouver Half in May.
Post race
Warm down:
Well I finished the race and the volunteers made me sit down and called medical over because I was shaking pretty badly I gather. I think I was having a crying/laughing/"ow this hurts"/hyperventilation moment. Anyways, I was relatively fine and not in any serious hypovolemia/hyponatremia/hypoglycemia/etc/etc.
After they let me go, I got my finisher's medal and food and wandered around looking for my friend. I'm sure it would have been funny to watch me as I was pretty zoned out and clutching my food like it was my last meal or something. Stretched a bit.
Event comments:
I know there is quite a bit of criticsm about what you get for what you pay for this race. However, I don't really care to get a bunch of stuff with my race fee. I'm pretty happy with the cheap gatorade bottle I picked up at one of the bike aide stations. I would rather the race director put more money into police and other traffic control (they had alberta motor association drivers). There were major intersections involved in this race and I didn't experience any problems with vehicles on the course or have any doubts about my safety because their were traffic monitors everywhere.
I really enjoyed the point to point race. I have never done one before and I felt that Calgary 70.3 did a really amazing job making sure that everything was on time and organized. There were tons and tons of volunteers to make it easy on me while racing: from wet suit strippers to volunteers to help put gear back into transition bag. Awesome, awesome volunteers.
The only major criticism I have is the finishing stretch leading up to the dismount line. It was in pretty poor condition from the winter with lots of wide cracks in the road.
Overall, I felt this was a really well run race. Went to the awards ceremony because my friend told me to go just in case because I came 5th and it might roll down. My age group didn't, but there were a few age groups in both the men's and women's which rolled down to the 20th and beyond spot. Also, some age groups did not fill and those spots were reallocated.
Drove home on Monday after the race. I was definately wearing my finisher's tshirt and my spiffy compression tights. Proof:
Ya...My vanity would not let me take a picture containing any more of me.
Edited original version because I was feeling less lazy today.
5:58:06

I love this commercial: Played on Versus during the Tour:
Whether or not you win this thing, you’ve got to decide how you’re gonna walk out of here when it’s all said and done because the game is going to go on. And there’s only one rule you’re going to need to know about:
There are no second chances.
There is only this moment and the next moment. Every one of those moments is a test that you get to take one time – and only one time.
So, if you see an opening – tear into it! If you get a shot at victory, make damn sure you take it! Seize that moment. That moment is a crossroads where everything you want will collide with everything standing in your way.
You’ve got momentum at your back. Fear and doubt are thundering like a freight train straight at you. And all you’ve got, the only difference between making history and being history, the only thing – THE ONLY THING – you can count on at any given moment is YOU.
It’s You versus Them.
You versus No.
You versus Can’t.
It’s You versus Next Year. Last Year. Statistics. Excuses.
You versus History.
You versus The Odds.
You versus 2nd Place.
The clock is ticking – let’s see what you’ve got.
Ready, set, go. :)

Jersey TWINS!! Me + Andy Schleck :)
Andy and I are jersey twins now!!! YAY!! My Team Saxo Bank Luxembourg Champions jersey came yesterday in the mail from Denmark! I am quite impressed with international shipping from Denmark...those Danes must be quite efficent...:) I wore it for my ride last night and wore it this morning to watch Andy kick some butt on the Col de Tourmalet. Pictures will happen at some point. Haha. I'm too lazy right now.
Watched the Tour stage today! I was shaking for pretty much the entire last half as soon as the climb on Col de Tourmalet started. So proud of Andy! I feel like he left himself out on the mountain and must give Alberto some credit (although it vexes me to do so) that he did not give Andy any breathing room and also left himself out on the mountain. Haha. Maybe tomorrow Andy can just throw something random out there and make some sort of breakaway attempt?? I can only hope...and then yell at him all Saturday morning in the time trial and cross my fingers that he puts in the time trial attempt of his life.
Woke up at 330am to watch the stage today and am now paying for it. I will probably go for an easy swim/bike after dinner tonight and then hitting the sack I think. Yesterday was pretty brutal for my swim/bike/run sessions. Legs are not impressed with me for some reason (prob has something to do with the run from the weekend and the start of taper).
Easy work day in the lab tomorrow and have swim/run planned. Crescendo part of taper!
4 more days till IMLP sign up! Ahhh!

It's TAPER time! AS Murmur style...
Yay for TAPER!
Well the beginning of taper anyways. Have a bit of volume this weekend, but I am going for a crescendo--decrescendo type taper (yes, I am a dork and just described my taper as crescendo--decrescendo--thank you med school...I just compared my taper to an aortic stenosis murmur...)
Took a break yesterday because I was feeling fairly tired. Tonight I just have a 25km ride planned. I just ate, so I need to chill my stomach out a bit.
So hungry...ate way too much since lunch...noooo snacking tonight. Need to be responsible and not eat an elephant a day.
Woke up at 4am to watch the Tour...nothing really happened. Good to see Lance in a breakaway. I guess it is all going to come down to Col de Tourmalet on Thursday...GO ANDY GO!!!!

My nervous system is crying inside...
Well 21km run in the books this morning. Listened to some pretty saweet music, including the previously mentioned "Revolver" even though there was nothing revolving about today's run. Wasn't particularly fast, but it was pretty warm out and there was a strong headwind on the way back.
Post run activities were not particularly exciting. I had to de-nauseaify (yes, I have created a new term, one day it will be put in place of the word "anti-emetic" in clinical practice, just wait...) by lying down on the floor for some time and then lying in bed for a bit nibbling on some crackers. Stomach not happy. Had a shower and realised that I was pretty wobbly and my leg muscles kept threatening to cramp up on me. Nervous system not happy. Stomach unhappy + nervous system unhappy=pretty wicked awesome times (****super sarcastic for those unable to determine whether I was actually having the time of my life having nausea and muscle cramping and wobbliness all at the same time). Why I was like this? Who knows? Body is angry...tired...hungry...adjective of your choice that does not describe happiness. Haha. My nervous system definately got the worse end of the bargain as it is still crying inside--the nausea has subsided. I have got the compression tights on now and am letting them infuse their magic into my legs. Yes, my compression tights do have the ability to infuse magic into my legs. Don't question it.
Went grocery shopping which can be an adventure at the best of times...I am awesome and zoned out a few times while wandering around the fruit and vegtable section...and then the dairy section...and then the bread and dip section...I didn't run into anyone with my shopping cart though! **WINNER**
Have a 25-30km ride planned for this evening post salt infused dinner (infused is a word of the day apparently). Gonna take it easy on my legs and recover during this ride.
2 weeks out from the Calgary 70.3!!! 1 week out from Ironman Lake Placid sign up!!!
Tomorrow is a HUGE stage at the TOUR!!! GO ANDY GO!!! :)

Revolver=Best set in the whole wide world
So...revolver.
The story behind this one: I went swimming last night (even though I didn't *really* want to and just wanted to lie around and read)...anyways. Started my main set after 1500m warm up. 8x100 as:
3x100 rotate fast 25 front to back
100 fast
3x100 rotate fast 25 back to front
100 fast
Well I was listening to my ipod and "Revolver" by Madonna and David Guetta came on...so I named the set Revolver. I know...funny...
I also went 116 and 115 for to 2 100's which is pretty darn good.
---------------------------
Feeling really fatigued even though I have been getting some good workouts in. I am definately sleeping enough (?) as I am getting 8-9hrs a night. Just worn down I think at this point? TAPER time soon!! Please, please make taper come faster!!
Need to go for a run tonight...trying to gain motivation to do so...maybe I'll do a bit of a fartlek to keep myself going...around 12km to run tonight. Going to go for a lie down and read a bit.

To my brother: My guy is winning the TOUR!!
It is now official! My guy is winning the TOUR now!! Nananananananananana to my brother.
Feeling pretty tired from the weekend still. Only ran 5km yesterday and have a short 20km ride planned today. Need to stretch my glut out as well. I have not defeated it yet.
My alarm clock failed to go off this morning and I almost missed the Tour stage...it was close...but I ended up waking up with about 30-35km left in the stage. Too bad they were pretty much already finished the Col de Madeline climb...oh wells.
Attempting to plan a trip to Vegas! :) Hopefully my friends can get time off work!

Andy winning a Stage=Melissa running fast?
So...just fantastic stage win today for Andy Schleck! AMAZING!!! Haha.
I was so pumped (and determined to not fall like last time), started out a bit stiff but really started to feel strong about a km into the run. I ran 9.09km in 44:58!! I KNOW!! crazy! Haha. Yay for having a breakthrough run!
Little bit disappointed with the end of the World Cup final...but I will survive! Andy Schleck made up for it today and my run as a result of Andy winning was fast!
GO ANDY GO!!

Sorry Lance...I love Andy now...
I've decided I love Andy Schleck. Haha. He was my original pick to win the Tour this year anyways...I feel a little bit guilty for switching allegiences to Andy...
Anyways. Did a ride today. 45km in the 32C heat! My Gu brew was warm after about 20min...blech.
Swim and run tomorrow. HOT HOT HOT

Melissa + Gravity = Life Fail
Well...we already know the experience I had with gravity on Saturday...Melissa + running + tree root + gravity = Owie. Now Melissa + gravity in general = life fail.
Went to physio this morning because my Gluts and ITB on my left side have been giving me trouble for the past 2 months since the Vancouver half marathon. Well, I learned among other things that I do not stabilize properly when running...or biking technically...So I now have to re-program my body to adequately stabilize joints so that I don't have to deal with my gluts and ITB hurting. Oooooo...and i get to stretch! YAAAA!!!
I also learned that swim/bike/run are fundamentally incompatible with one another as far as sports go. Yaaaaaa triathlon!!
I will go back to work now while contracting my lower abdominals and pelvic floor. Rock on! I am determined to no longer fail at life where gravity is concerned! :)

C'est l'heure du TOUR! Part 2...
Well the reason this is a part 2 is because of the events that transpired due to me being so chaotically excited about the Prologue. Being as amped up as I was, I figured "man, I'm going to be so pro running today"...wrong...I was just distracted and decided to go on a 20km run on a trail around a local lake. WORST DECISION EVER YESTERDAY.
At one point I missed the turn which would have kept me on the same main trail that I was supposed to be on and then ended up on this super rocky and narrow trail. So I figured, meh, and kept going. Eventually the trail would meet up again. It did eventually...but only after I tripped over a tree root and went sprawling to the ground. Awesome fun, you are all jealous, I can tell. My tights saved me from what could have been some pretty awesome scraping to my hip and thigh. Just some minor surface wounds and brusing. My hands are a bit scraped. Left shoulder and neck sore. So I had tripped about 8km into my run. Ran the 2km back to my car, drove home, checked my handed out (wasn't sure how deep the cuts were). I went back out after dinner to finish off the other 10km. 20km/20km complete. 20.49km if we want to be specific.
Note to self: Don't trip on tree roots because you arn't paying attention because you are so excited about the Tour de France...Be less amped up before running...focus...
Today I did a 3200m swim and a short 30min spin on a spin bike at the gym. Really wishing I had my trainer here in Victoria...but I'll have to make due with what I have. It was a bit hard to hold onto the bars because of bruising on my hand, but I HTFU'ed today and made it through. Haha.
My left IT band and glut are still giving me some grief. I rolled them out on a roller after my spin and did some stretching. Hopefully they will feel better tomorrow. Pretty tired from all of yesterday's "excitment".
